From the very first Sustainability Sundowner to new tree plantings and waterwise certification, the City of Subiaco has seen many updates in the sustainability space over the past few months.
Here are some key sustainability updates from around the City:
- The City released its Local Planning Policy 1.3 – Sustainable Development. The policy requires all applicable residential developments to include sustainability measures in the design, and can be read here.
- To celebrate the launch of LPP 1.3, the City hosted a Sustainability Sundowner event on 21 February. The event, which was sponsored by Rise Urban, featured presentations from two key sustainability experts: Sid Thoo (Green Gurus) and Jimmy Thompson (MJA Studio). Both Sid and Jimmy shared their sustainable development tips in videos that can be viewed here and here.
- The City planted 275 new trees in parks, reserves and on verges, in 2023. The City’s urban tree canopy has increased to 21.2 per cent.
- Following the rollout of Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) to single-unit dwellings, FOGO is set to be rolled out to apartments and multi-unit dwellings across the City in the coming months.
- The City has been confirmed as carbon neutral for its business operations in 2022-2023, making this the fourth year in a row that the City has been certified by Climate Active.
- Across the 2022-2023 financial year, the City reduced operational carbon emissions by 31 per cent.
- The City has also been certified as a Gold Waterwise Council for 2024. This is the 13th year the City has received this certification, and the 7th year it has achieved Gold status.
Mayor David McMullen said these figures and achievements affirm that the City is prioritising sustainability and reducing emissions.
“These updates are tangible, and measurable. They give the City of Subiaco licence to say that our actions continue to make a difference,” he said.
“Our sustainability work will be ongoing, with initiatives such as the transition of our fleet vehicles to electric; and the roll-out of FOGO to apartments and multi-unit properties.”
