Subi Greenwalks

Vision

Inspired by Subiaco’s rich history and European heritage, Subi Greenwalks is an initiative focused on transforming laneways and pedestrian connections into greener, safer and more vibrant public spaces.

Several laneways intersecting Rokeby Road have been identified as suitable Greenwalks projects. Walmsley Lane was completed in 2024 as the pilot project, with Kannis Lane and Hiddlestone Lane being identified for future upgrades.

Walmsley Lane

Status: Completed
Completion: 2024

Walmsley Lane was the pilot project for Subi Greenwalks and is an important pedestrian connection between Rokeby Road, nearby parking and local businesses.

Formerly an underutilised service laneway, the project transformed the space into a green, welcoming and safe pedestrian route that supports both daytime activity and the nighttime economy.

Before Greenwalks
After Greenwalks

The project won the 2024 Minister for Local Government's Place Innovation Award for the Metropolitan Perth and Peel region, recognising the transformation of the underutilised walkway into a vibrant space for community.

What was delivered?

Through the integration of lighting, public art, planning and seating, the upgrade:

  • Improved pedestrian comfort and walkability

  • Increased the sense of safety for people moving between Rokeby Road and nearby car parks

  • Increased greenery, canopy cover and stormwater retention

  • Enhanced Subiaco's village atmosphere and public realm quality

Key features:

  • Public Art mural, Whimsey on Walmsley by Graeme Miller Richards

  • Vertical and overhead planting

  • Oversized planters with leafy shrubs and cascading greenery

  • Catenary lighting

  • New public seating

  • Removal of redundant infrastructure, including bollards.

Kannis Lane

Project overview

The project will include removal of existing damaged asphalt, resurfacing with red brick paving and cobblestone banding, new planting with irrigation, and festoon lighting installed along the length of the laneway. The iconic mural “Subiaco was Built on a Sunday” by Melski McVee will be retained and celebrated as part of the works.

To minimise disruption and coordinate with nearby activity, works will be delivered in three stages, aligned with the Rowland Street Car Park upgrades and the Subi Blooms festival.

Upgrade features

The Kannis Lane upgrade includes:

  • Removal of the existing damaged asphalt

  • Resurfacing with red brick paving and cobblestone banding

  • Introduction of pot plants with irrigation to add greenery and soften the laneway

  • Installation of festoon lighting along the length of the laneway

Construction stages and timing

Works are being delivered in three staged phases:

  • Stage 1 – 13 to 14 April 2026
Water meter installation, including one night of nightworks.

  • Stage 2 – Mid April to early May 2026
Asphalt demolition, electrical and irrigation groundworks, and repaving.

  • Stage 3 – Mid May to early June 2026

Hiddlestone Lane

Project overview

Hiddlestone Lane is a thoroughfare in the Subiaco town centre with a history of use for events, public art and installations, and will soon undergo an upgrade.

The project has been considered by Council and is progressing through the design development phase. The City is partnering with Human Urban, aligning with their redevelopment works at 83–85 Rokeby Road, to deliver improvements to the laneway. This collaborative approach supports more efficient delivery and improved design outcomes.

The project is currently in the design development phase. All design elements are subject to further refinement, approvals and consultation. Further updates will be provided as the project progresses.
