Market Square infrastructure upgrades

Market Square Park is currently undergoing essential infrastructure upgrades including a power upgrade, a new vehicle access point along Roberts Road, turf maintenance and rehabilitation, rotunda maintenance, and an improved lighting design for the rotunda.

Power Upgrades

The power upgrades include four new power bollards and an upgraded switchboard. This upgrade will reduce the use of generators during events, making future events in the park quieter and more sustainable.

Vehicle Crossover

A new vehicle access point has been installed along Roberts Road, east of Axon Street, allowing for better vendor and maintenance access to the park. 

Turf Maintenance and Rehabilitation

Lawn amenity has been enhanced through turf rehabilitation works. This included fertiliser applications, weed maintenance, and re-turfing worn areas at Roberts Road entrance and near the playground.

Rotunda Maintenance

The rotunda is a central focal point for the park and is widely used for music performances and community activities. It is the park’s most recognisable feature and a well-loved structure. Maintenance works to the rotunda will include:

  • Replacing missing skirting boards,

  • Repairing broken bannisters and spire,

  • Removing stains and rusted gutters, and

  • Fixing damaged paint.

The tiles of the rotunda floor were also lifting and cracking. To remove any trip hazards, the City is replacing this damaged tiled surface with a level, non-slip concrete floor. 

Rotunda Lighting

The City is also investigating opportunities for enhanced lighting within the park. The planned lighting design of the rotunda will increase safety and security, as well as visual appeal.

Public Accessibility

The upgrades commenced on Friday 25 July. The park will remain fully open and accessible throughout the process of these upgrades.
