Bins, Recycling and Waste

Easter and ANZAC Day Collection Schedule: Waste will not be collected on Good Friday. If your bin is normally collected on a Friday, please place it out as usual on Friday, and it will be collected on Saturday instead.

There are no changes to collection services on Easter Monday or ANZAC Day.

The City of Subiaco uses the three colour waste system. Red lid bins for general waste, yellow lid bins for recycling and lime green bins for food organics and garden organics (FOGO)

All residential properties have a standard residential waste service levy included in their rates, which includes collection of the following;

120L general waste bin collected once per fortnight
120L or 240L recycling bin collected once per fortnight
120L or 240L FOGO bin collected once per week.

Residents can opt for a larger 240L general waste bin, but this will increase the waste service levy from $408 P/A to $696.72.

Please note: All requests for the 240L bin, must be sent in writing to the City to city@subiaco.wa.gov.au (if renting, the request must come from the property owner)

The only items in your recycling bin should be aluminium, plastic bottles and containers glass (broken glass included) and flattened cardboard.

Top tips for recycling

  • Flatten any cardboard boxes to maximize space

  • Ensure lids are removed from bottles, these can be recycled seperatley at the West Metro Recycling Centre

  • All items should be clean, dry and loose (not in paper or plastic bags)

  • No meat trays, takeaway containers or coffee cups - these will go in your general waste bin

  • No food scraps, general waste, aerosols, batteries

  • Ensure there are no electrical items in the recycling, these items can cause truck fires and contaminate other recycling.

Reduce and reuse first - recycling is great, but reducing waste and reusing items are even better for the environment.

Useful tips

All general waste goes directly to landfill, please help reduce our environmental impact by minimizing what you put in this bin. The less waste here, the better!

What goes in the general waste bin?

  • General rubbish

  • Soft packaging and meat trays

  • Nappies

  • Takeaway coffee cups

  • Hygiene products

NO food waste, recyclables (glass, aliminium, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers) electrical items, hazardous waste, paint etc.

The FOGO bin system collects Food Organics and Garden Organics for composting.

It helps reduce landfill waste and turns organic material into nutrient-rich soil.

Items that can go into the FOGO bin

  • Food scraps including egg shells, bones, seafood including shells, coffee grounds, tea leaves, fruit and vegetable peelings, bread and dairy products,

  • Garden organics including prunings, small branches and twigs, leaves and weeds, lawn clippings

NO - plastic of any kind, nappies, glass, plant pots, coffee pods, soil, takeway packing, dog poo.

Please remember to use certified compostable liners (look for the symbol below)

Helpful tips

  • Any smelly food items e.g. meat/fish/shellfish pop in a caddy liner and leave them in the fridge/freeze and transfer into the large FOGO bin the night before it is due to be emptied

  • Place newspaper in the bottom of the larger bin to catch any residual liquid

  • Paper towel lining in the bottom of the caddy bags will also assist with any leaking issues as they are thin.

  • Only fill the caddy ¾ of the way to ensure you can tie the bags.

  • Clean or hose out the bins once they have been emptied or spray the bins with fly spray

  • Ensure the bin lids are always closed

  • You can purchase bin kill here which is zip tied to the bin handle, but sits inside the bin to kill odours/flies

  • Purchase larger 120L/240L bin liners, to use alongside the smaller caddy bag liners

  • Utilize the FOGO bins for garden waste as well as food waste, mixing them improves the composting process by balancing moisture (from food) and carbon rich material (from garden waste)

When the City initially rolled out the FOGO bins, every resident was supplied with 2 complimentary rolls.

If you are finding that your stock of compostable bin liners is running low, you can purchase them from general stores such as Bunnings, Coles, Woolworths and Aldi which have various stock items available for purchase.

Alternatively, if you find they don't have any stock there are various suppliers online with liners available for purchase.

NOTE: Any item containing the leaf compostable symbol (see attached) can be placed in your FOGO waste bin.

Electrical waste (known as e-waste) & batteries should not be put ANY kerbside bins because it contains hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can leak into the environment and cause serious harm to human health and ecosystems.

When e-waste/batteries are sent to landfills or incinerated, these toxic substances can contaminate soil, water, and air. Additionally, electrical items often contain valuable materials like gold, copper, and rare earth metals that can be recovered and reused through proper recycling.

It also poses serious safety risks, including causing truck fires. Many electronic devices contain lithium-ion batteries, which can be easily damaged or punctured when compacted in waste collection trucks. Damaged batteries can overheat and ignite, leading to dangerous fires that threaten the safety of waste collection workers and emergency responders.

Disposing of e-waste and batteries correctly not only prevents pollution but also conserves natural resources and supports sustainable waste management practices.

The West Metro recycling centre offers a free drop off service for E-waste & batteries, to see a full list of accepted items please click here

For the safety and wellbeing of all residents and community members, strict precautions must be followed when removing, transporting, and disposing of asbestos and other hazardous waste.

If your bin was out on time and has been missed or you simply forgot to pop it out, please report it as soon as possible , ideally within 24 hours. This allows us to organise a return collection while the truck is still operating in the area.

Missed bins can be reported online here

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep waste services running smoothly

Collection schedules will continue as per the previous year’s calendar. You can check your collection area using the Waste Area Guide, or by visiting the find my bin day tool here

  • General waste and recycling bins are collected fornightly (alternate)

  • FOGO is collected weekly

All bins must be stored within the property boundary (other than when left out for collections)

The City also recommends that bins be stored away from public areas and kept in designated storage spaces to ensure waste is managed effectively and safely.

Bins should not be left permanently in laneways or on verges, as this can obstruct footpaths, create safety hazards, and contribute to litter and illegal dumping. Proper bin storage helps maintain a cleaner, more orderly environment and reduces the risk of vandalism, pests, and odours. Residents and businesses are encouraged to place bins out only on collection days and return them promptly to their storage areas after servicing.

If you require bins for a new property or a bin has gone missing/needs to be repaired you can submit a request online , please click here to view our online services.

The assisted household bin service is a waste collection service for residents unable to move their bins from their residential property to collection area to be emptied.

The waste driver will wheel the bins out from an agreed pick-up location on the resident’s property and return the empty bin to the same location.

This service is provided at no additional cost to the normal servicing charge, provided the resident can meet the criteria.

To enquire regarding this service please call or email the City on 08 9237 9222 or city@subiaco.wa.gov.au

The standard residential waste service is $408 P/A (120L)

Residents can opt for a larger 240L general waste bin, but this will increase the waste service levy from $408 P/A to $696.72.

Please note: All requests for the 240L bin, must be sent in writing to the City to city@subiaco.wa.gov.au (if renting, the request must come from the property owner)

Please click here for further information on rates and Waste Service Levy's.

Residents are encouraged to use the drop off services offered by the West Metro Recycling Centre in Shenton Park (corner of Brockway Road and Lemnos Street)
