40km per hour project

The reduction of speed to 40km per hour (from 50km per hour) on local residential streets, and some local distributor roads, is part of a joint proposal across the local governments of Subiaco, Cambridge, Vincent, South Perth, Perth, Nedland and Victoria Park.

This initiative builds on a successful trial by the City of Vincent, which demonstrated that lower speeds reduced accident rates, encouraged walking and cycling, and improved community satisfaction with minimal impact on travel times.

Project Objectives

  • Reduce vehicle speeds to improve road safety and minimise the likelihood and severity of crashes

  • Create a safer and more comfortable environment for all road users, including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and people using mobility devices.

  • Support greater community connectivity by making it easier and safer for people to access local destinations on foot or by bicycle.

  • Enhance the liveability of the area through a safer, lower-speed road environment that balances the needs of all users.
