A large lemon scented gum tree on Bagot Road has been entered into the City of Subiaco Significant Tree Register after a Council decision this week.
The tree (Corymbia citriodora) is considered to have significant visual, heritage, and aesthetic value owing to its age, good health and excellent condition.
It was planted in about 1967 by the community-sponsored Senior Citizen’s Club when the community centre that it sits outside of was built.
There are 24 other trees listed on the City’s internal Significant Tree Register – which seeks to protect and preserve significant trees – under Local Planning Scheme No. 5 (LPS 5).
Inclusion on the register means that development approval must be obtained should the removal of the tree ever be proposed.
Trees provide many benefits that have both economic and less tangible values. They improve land value, they also purify urban air, filter noise, play a role in modifying the effects of climate, provide shade to reduce the heat generated from the road and verge surface, and importantly, provide valuable habitats for the fauna associated with the local area.
