Seeing double this National Volunteer Week

Subiaco resident and former Deputy Mayor of the City Judith Gedero regularly gives back to local residents by volunteering at the Justice of the Peace (JP) service run by Subiaco Library.

Judith first volunteered at ECU when she was working there about 30 years ago and she has had many volunteering roles in her life, including as a Samaritan’s phone counsellor and at the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, but she says that working as a JP for the City of Subiaco has been her favourite of them all.

Judith was looking at broadening her volunteering participation and recently approached Subiaco Library to see if she could help with anything else, in addition to the JP services that she provides there.

That very day, she ended up assisting the Books on Wheels volunteering service that delivers books to residents with a disability or even a temporary illness or injury which leaves them housebound, who would otherwise be unable to visit the library.

Judith will now be able to be seen delivering books to places like nursing homes and aged care facilities across our suburbs in the coming weeks.

Judith commented that she has gained a lot of personal fulfilment from volunteering and said, “The highlight for me as a volunteer is to be able to meet so many different people from different countries.

“I’ve found out all sorts of things, such as where they’ve travelled to, when I’m having a chat.”

When asked what she would say to people who have never considered volunteering but may have the capacity to help out, Judith’s response was emphatic:

“Go for it - don’t even hesitate! It enriches your life."

Judith is just one of the City’s many volunteers who are due our thanks and appreciation this National Volunteer Week.

Mayor David McMullen said, "National Volunteer Week 2023 runs from Monday 15 May until Sunday 21 May, and provides us with a great opportunity to recognise the significant contribution volunteers make to our community.

“This year the City has given all its volunteers a voucher and a card to thank them for their time and efforts, and I’d also like to say a personal ‘thank you’ to all of our City of Subiaco volunteers.”

Volunteers have the chance to meet with a wide range of people from across our community. Please email volunteer@subiaco.wa.gov.au if you’re interested in volunteering.
