A Subiaco Museum volunteer has received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the King’s Birthday 2023 Honours List.
Marion Gathercole – who runs the See Subi on Sunday walks – was awarded the honour in recognition of her service to the Subiaco community.
She has been researching and organising the free walks for the last 22 years and has built them into something of a City institution.
They are a way to share the area’s stories, heritage, character and beauty in an engaging and very tangible way, with no two walks ever the same. Participants are also encouraged to share their own stories, experiences and connections with the group.
Mayor David McMullen said, “The City is lucky to have Marion as a volunteer. By all accounts, you can clearly see the passion and enthusiasm that goes into every walk. Her contribution and dedication to promoting and sharing a deeper understanding of our local cultural heritage is invaluable.
“Marion thoroughly deserves recognition of her invaluable contribution to our local community.
“Congratulations on this honour.”
The City is proud to support the See Subi on Sunday walks and congratulates Marion on this honour.
The walks are held bi-monthly from July through to May. They are suitable for all ages and run for about an hour and a half.
