As you’d expect, preparation is in full swing for this weekend’s National Tree Day community planting event; what might surprise you is who’s undertaking a lot of the work…
The City has contracted a unique local social enterprise on a meaningful mission: connect at-risk young people with hands-on employment opportunities to help make a positive impact on young lives and make a difference in our community.
The ReNew Property Maintenance team have been busy formalising the hydro-zone in Mabel Talbot Park ahead of the community planting event to ensure it’s ready for locals and City staff to plant 3000 natives this Sunday.
A hydro-zone garden bed groups plants that have similar water requirements together as a way to conserve water and increase sustainability.
Native plants not only help save water, they also reduce the need for excess fertiliser and weed control while increasing biodiversity.
As well as readying Mabel Talbot Park for National Tree Day, the ReNew team also undertake other natural area management and environmental landscape works across a number of City parks, reserves and green corridors to help the City achieve its environmental and urban greening objectives.
To join in the community planting event, drop by Mabel Talbot Park (near Peel Street) on Sunday 6 August between 9am to 11am with your gloves and sleeves rolled up. A light morning tea and hot cuppa will follow the planting event.
The City has been participating in National Tree Day since 2008, with the community contributing to the planting of many areas such as Mueller Park, portions of Stubbs Terrace, Rosalie Park, Charles Stoke Reserve, and Lake Jualbup.
