Landmark road name approved

The City of Subiaco has secured naming approval for the first road to be named in the Subi East redevelopment area.

‘Collard Lane’ pays homage to Cyril Collard – the first Noongar player from the Subiaco Football Club to play in the Australian Football League (AFL).

Mr Collard paved the way for others to follow in his footsteps, and the new name celebrates his achievements on the local and national stage.

The Subiaco East Whadjuk Elders group and WA Football Commission initially put forward ‘Collard’ as a road name before Council unanimously voted to approve it in April of this year.

In accordance with the Land Administration Act 1997, any new roads created through subdivision need to have the name approved by the local government prior to final approval by the Minister for Lands through the Geographic Names Committee.

Mayor David McMullen said Collard Lane – which directly adjoins Subiaco Oval – reflects Aboriginal and football heritage.

“Extensive community consultation for the Subi East Master Plan showed the community were keen to see the heritage and history of the oval and football recognised and celebrated in the development, and – with a Reconciliation Action Plan underway – the City is also passionate about better representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across our suburbs.”

The City, fittingly, received approval for the new road name during NAIDOC Week.

As part of Council’s approval of Collard Lane, additional signage will be installed at the site explaining the background of Cyril Collard.
