Hay Street closure

The temporary partial closure of Hay Street (between Catherine Street and Rokeby Road) has had to be extended, to completely close this section of Hay Street to traffic from early morning Saturday 13 February.

Pedestrian access to businesses will be available at all times.

The identified structural issues with the buildings at 440 and 424-436 Hay Street have been subject to further monitoring and independent assessment.

The City has received a report showing the facades of both of the subject buildings are not stable, and recommending a larger exclusion zone be maintained in front of the properties.

This requires the full closure of Hay Street to traffic, between Catherine Street and Rokeby Road, with a diversion via Catherine Street. Most through traffic will be diverted along Axon Street, to Churchill Avenue and Rokeby Road.
To protect public safety it is essential for the City to implement these changes urgently.

The road will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.

Business vibrancy is a key priority for the City, and the next steps will be worked out urgently to minimise disruption. But public safety is paramount. A Special Council Meeting will be held at 5.30pm on Monday 15 February 2021 to discuss the matter.

City staff will be visiting affected businesses first thing on Saturday morning to discuss the road closure.
