Subiaco Library has launched a special event series to run from May until December aimed at supporting community members caring for or supporting a family member living with dementia.
The series – offered in conjunction with the City’s Community Development and Positive Ageing program – is aimed at raising awareness of dementia support services, creating opportunities for carers of people living with dementia to meet, and providing tools and information to help community members living with dementia.
Events will cover a broad range of topics – ranging from how to create a dementia-friendly home to understanding changes in behaviour – and will include support and resources from Dementia Australia and Alzheimer’s WA.
The library is also offering “Dementia Kits” specially curated for the series, containing activity prompts which can be explored by family members and caregivers with those living with dementia. The memory kits are intended to stimulate memories, and contain music boxes, puzzles, reminiscence cards and helpful guides with engagement ideas for caregivers of those suffering memory loss.
Upcoming sessions include:
Thursday 20 July Communication and Dementia, 9.30 am – 12.30 pm
Thursday 27 July Recording Reminiscences as a Podcast, 9.30am – 12pm
Thursday 17 August Understanding Changes in Behaviour, 9.30 am – 12.30 pm
While some events are designed specifically for carers, there will be a wide range of sessions which welcome anyone in the community who supports someone living with dementia.
