City supports National Recycling Week

National Recycling Week is taking place between 13 and 19 November this year to help raise awareness of and encourage waste reduction.

To celebrate, the City is hosting and supporting a number of special events as well as highlighting some regular activities that can help reduce waste to landfill and, in turn, reduce carbon emissions.

During this week, City residents can drop green waste off at the West Metro Recycling Centre for free (usually a small fee) and attend events such as tour of a resource recovery centre or the West Metro Recycling Centre.

The City and WMRC will also have an information stall at the Subi Farmers Market on Saturday 18 November to answer all your recycling questions and help with general advice around reducing waste to landfill.

Subiaco Pop-up Library is holding a special storytime for the week which includes a visit from one of the City waste trucks and stories which cover waste, recycling and the art and magic of re-using and repurposing too.

More than 200,000 tonnes of Australia’s clothing and textiles ends up in landfill each year, so the City is supporting a Good Sammy clothing swap event on Saturday 18 November and a pre-loved clothing market on Sunday 19 November to encourage a more circular economy.

Outside of National Recycling Week, the City supports the weekly Subi Farmers Market which is perfect for picking up package-free local produce and green goodies, and encourages community members to utilise the library which includes free e-resources.

We also partnered with Containers for Change this year to attach Container Exchange points to public bins so anyone in the community could collect and return eligible bottles to a refund point to recycle them.

The City has a focus on sustainability and greener practices and is certified carbon neutral.
