City partners with Subiaco Justice Centre to raise awareness about elder abuse

World Elder Abuse Awareness day takes place on Thursday 15 June. The day serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of elder abuse, and the importance of advance care planning to help safeguard rights, and protect older members of our community.

The City of Subiaco has worked with the Subiaco Justice Centre since 2018, and as part of this year’s partnership, the centre are hosting a free Advance Care Planning session at Subiaco Library on Thursday 15 June, from 10am to 12pm.

The session, facilitated by a Subiaco Justice Centre lawyer, will include practical advice on how to safeguard your rights, plan for the future, and care for your assets. It will also include an opportunity to ask the lawyer questions in an informal and confidential space.

Vicki Edwards, a lawyer for the Subiaco Justice Centre said, “Many older people have questions about advanced planning to secure their future, and this event will be a great opportunity to access our resources and ask questions in a relaxed and friendly environment.

“We focus on empowering older adults in their decision-making by providing relevant advice, information, education and support.”

City of Subiaco Mayor David McMullen said, “Our population, on average, is living longer. People quite rightly expect to be able to live their later years fulsomely and with dignity. Unfortunately there still exists a need within society for initiatives such as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

“The City is therefore proud to partner with the Subiaco Justice Centre, to help empower older members of our community through a variety of initiatives – including this Advance Care Planning session. Getting the right information is critical when trying to navigate the legal system; and particularly, when making decisions about important future life events.”
