To support Plastic Free July, the City of Subiaco has placed a series of pop-up tote bag libraries, delivered in partnership with the Western Metropolitan Regional Council, at local supermarkets across Subiaco, including Golden Choice Supermarket, Woolworths Subiaco, and Coles Subiaco.
The libraries, which were unveiled at these supermarkets earlier this week, encourage shoppers to borrow a tote bag during their grocery run, and pay it forward by returning them – or even donating some of their own reusable shopping bags to the library.
Mayor David McMullen said, “Our pop-up tote bag libraries are a practical and convenient way for people to practice some sustainable habits while on the go.
“This Plastic Free July, and beyond, I encourage our community to reduce the use of single-use plastics by making simple swaps, that can be introduced into your day-to-day routine. This might involve bringing a Keep Cup to your local café instead of opting for a takeaway cup; or packaging your lunch using alternatives to plastic wraps and bags. Collectively, steps like these can make a big difference in the long run.”
In the lead-up to Plastic Free July, the City and WMRC hosted a beeswax wrap-making workshop and waste talk at the Tom Dadour Community Centre, which was well attended and saw community members come together to learn about waste reduction and sustainable practices.
The City has also implemented a series of internal mug libraries, to encourage staff to opt for reusable mugs over single-use takeaway cups.
