NAIDOC Week 2023 will be held from 2 to 9 July, and to celebrate, the City of Subiaco will be hosting a program of free events across its locations that community members are invited to attend.
To kick off the celebrations, the City is welcoming the Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company for a special performance of
‘Lingo Lah Lah’, a fun and interactive play about friendship, empathy, and the cultural diversity amongst us. The performance takes place at Shenton Park Community Centre on Monday 3 July, from 2pm to 3.30pm. Entry is free, and bookings are recommended.
On Wednesday 5 July, join us for a
Welcome to Country performed by Noongar Elder Freda Ogilvie, and traditional smoking ceremony outside Subiaco Library. The event will also include a morning tea and traditional dance. No bookings are required, and the event runs from 8.45am to 9.30am.
There are plenty of ways for kids to get involved this year, including two arts and crafts workshops at Subiaco Library.
The first activity, called
Noongarts and Crafts with Belinda Cox, will teach kids about the Dreaming through art symbols and paintings. This event takes place on Tuesday 4 July from 9.30am to 10.30am.
Brett Matters will host the second arts and crafts activity, where kids can learn about culture and storytelling through artwork. This interactive workshop takes place on Thursday 6 July from 10.30am to 11.30am.
Freda Ogilvie’s popular
NAIDOC Storytime is back for 2023, and this year, it will take place at Lords Recreation Centre. Join Freda on Friday 7 July from 10.30am to 12pm for yarns, stories, songs, and some crafts that kids of all ages will enjoy.
Of this year’s celebrations, Mayor David McMullen said, “The City’s NAIDOC Week events provide an opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate and recognise the rich culture and history of the Noongar people. With such a diverse range of events, from crafts for kids to an engaging Yirra Yaakin performance, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
