On Friday 26 January, 47 people from 21 countries received their Australian citizenship during a ceremony hosted by the City of Subiaco.
The ceremony was held in Rankin Gardens and opened with a Welcome to Country by Whadjuk Noongar Elder Freda Ogilvie.
Attendees included Mayor David McMullen, Hon. Tjorn Sibma MLC, Member for the North Metropolitan Region, Dr Katrina Stratton MLA, Freeman of the City Heather Henderson, and other Elected Members, amongst the new citizens and their friends and families.
Mayor David McMullen said, “I’d like to extend my congratulations and welcome to our newest citizens. We’re sure you’ll agree that the City of Subiaco, the place you have chosen as your next home, is a vibrant place to live and work, and has a strong sense of community.
“Australian citizenship provides a shared identity and creates a common bond that unites us, whilst acknowledging and respecting our diversity. I know you will continue to grow the strength and diversity of our community as you build your future here.”
Along with their citizenship certificates, the new citizens received a special gift from the City: an image designed by local Whadjuk artist Wendy Hayden.
Attendees also enjoyed a barbeque breakfast served by the Rotary Club of Matilda Bay, and music the Last Round Aces band.
