26 March 2024 marks 127 years since Subiaco became a municipality.
Subiaco was first settled by Benedictine monks in 1851, and in March 1897, it was proclaimed a municipality with 388 houses listed in its ratebook.
Prior to its municipality status, in 1881, the name ‘Subiaco’ was adopted for a cluster of houses, businesses, and the railway station that helped people travel from Perth to Fremantle.
Mayor David McMullen said the City’s rich history and heritage is worthy of celebration.
“A lot has happened in the 127 years since Subiaco earned its municipality status, and it’s worth celebrating and looking back every now and then. It’s the story of how we got here, and you don’t just build these neighbourhoods overnight.
“Our community are rightfully very passionate about the place that they call home, and we as a City work hard to preserve the local history and heritage that has shaped Subiaco’s identity.”
