City rolls out food organics bins

The City has rolled out food organics bins to local businesses to help reduce waste to landfill in 2021 while reducing general waste pick-up and processing costs.

The initiative provides a dedicated food organics bin for businesses and a weekly collection service, with any City of Subiaco business able to take part.

The collected food waste will be made into compost, helping to create a more circular economy.

To date, seven local businesses have opted into the sustainability initiative, including Community Coffee Co, Western Metropolitan Regional Council, Cancer Council WA, Subi Farmers Market, Subiaco Primary School, Wholefood Circus and MJA Studio.

Mayor Penny Taylor said this initiative came after a successful trial last year which received great feedback from businesses.

“We know our community values sustainability and this initiative contributes to making a difference diverting organic waste from landfill,” she said.

Council recently endorsed the Waste Plan 2020–2025 which includes the introduction of a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) system for households.
