Celebrate NAIDOC Week 2024

This year, NAIDOC Week will be held from 7 to 14 July. To celebrate, the City of Subiaco will be hosting a range of free events.

To kick things off, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company will present their highly- acclaimed children’s show Boodjar Kaatijin. Audiences will join Koorlbardi (Magpie), Weitj (Emu), Nyingarn (Echidna) and their koordah (friends) as they journey through Noongar Boodjar sharing stories of how the land was created. This performance takes place at Shenton Park Community Centre on Monday 8 July from 3pm to 4pm. Entry is free and booking is recommended.

On Tuesday 9 July, children can take part in Bush Pharmacy, a fun and interactive workshop with Sharon Wood-Kenney. Explore nature, significance of country and biodiversity. Held at Subiaco Library on Tuesday 9 July from 2pm to 3pm. Attendance is free and booking is recommended.

Join us for a special Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony on Wednesday 10 July from 9am to 10am. All members of the community are invited to attend this celebration outside Subiaco Library, which includes a native inspired morning tea. No bookings required.

Children can unleash their creativity with an Arts and Crafts with Justin Martin at Subiaco Library on Thursday 11 July. Listen to dreamtime stories while completing a piece of traditional art to take home. This free event is from 9.30am to 10.30am and bookings are recommended.

The week of festivities concludes with NAIDOC Storytime at Subiaco Library on Friday 12 July from 12pm to 1pm. Get swept up in music, dance and movement in this interactive session – and enjoy a reading of ‘Chunyart and the Cheeky Parrot’, as well as Dreamtime stories. Free entry but bookings are recommended.

The City recently launched its first Reconciliation Action Plan which outlines actionable strategies and initiatives aimed at promoting cultural awareness, fostering relationships and enhancing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the community.
