The City of Subiaco announced the launch of its first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) with a vibrant event held at the Subiaco Arts Centre.
The Reflect RAP, which was approved by the Council in November 2023, marks a significant milestone in the City's journey towards reconciliation. The plan outlines actionable strategies and initiatives aimed at promoting cultural awareness, fostering relationships and enhancing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the community.
Mayor David McMullen emphasised the significance of the Reflect RAP.
"In the City of Subiaco's long history, this is its first RAP. Today's Council and staff can be proud of what this signifies.
The RAP formalises a commitment to learning from history, respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and working towards reconciliation,” he said.
“I’d like to thank Reconciliation Australia, Reconciliation WA and various community organisations for their support and guidance in the development of the plan.”
The launch event featured a range of cultural performances and activities, including a Welcome to Country by Daniel Garlett, a smoking ceremony and the planting of a new bushtucker garden in Theatre Gardens.
Dale Tilbrook, bushtucker expert, shared insights about edible and healing plants on the day, further highlighting the importance of Indigenous knowledge and connection to the land.
The City’s launch event took place during National Reconciliation Week, tying in with reconciliation efforts across the nation. The theme for this year's National Reconciliation Week is ‘Now More Than Ever.’
