The City of Subiaco’s weekly homelessness support walk-in centre is welcoming Short Back and Sidewalks from Wednesday 19 February.
Short Back and Sidewalks is a free hair-cutting and grooming service for members of the community who are experiencing homelessness; they aim to create meaningful connections through conversation.
The City has engaged The Salvation Army’s Homelessness Services Team to deliver a weekly walk-in centre at The Third Place on Barker Road in Subiaco
since September 2023 to help support some of our most vulnerable community members.
Centre workers have successfully referred people to accommodation, mental health providers, and physical health services, as well as providing material aid such as hot food, water bottles, clothing, sleeping bags, and hygiene packs.
Other assistance has also been provided, including showers, financial support, first aid, and specific information and advice.
Short Back and Sidewalks will be at the Subiaco walk-in centre every six weeks starting from Wednesday 19 February between 12pm and 2pm.
Mayor David McMullen said Short Back and Sidewalks coming to the centre will make a difference to many lives.
“The centre is already having a tangible impact and supporting some of our most vulnerable community members. The addition of Short Back and Sidewalks will boost the level of support on offer,” he said.
“The work the Short Back and Sidewalks volunteers do is incredible. As a society, we all know the impact a person's appearance can have on how others may view them; particularly when it comes to opportunities for jobs and the like. This program means a free haircut, but it’s also more than that. There will be meaningful conversations, connections made, and - we hope - a ripple effect which will lead to some good things for some of the most marginalised people in our community.”
