The Safe Active Street project from Evans Street to Keightley Road was officially launched at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Lake Jualbup earlier today.
The project includes the installation of traffic calming measures, road treatments and wayfinding that reduces vehicle speeds to 30km/hr, with the aim of creating a safer and more accessible environment for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.
Evans Street, Excelsior Street and Keightley Road in Shenton Park were identified by our community as a popular cycling route for local residents and school students.
These upgrades also form part of Perth’s wider bicycle network, as they connect other travel routes and link community amenities, including the Shenton Park train station, Lake Jualbup, and Kings Park.
Mayor David McMullen said it was great to see this important project come to life in Shenton Park.
“The City of Subiaco is committed to road safety; and committed to accessible public spaces that promote a healthy lifestyle. With this Safe Active Street, we see these themes converge.
“This Safe Active Street is a first for our City. A project like this is never a silver bullet on its own; but now that it is complete, this Safe Active Street will join a range of initiatives and other 'business as usual' work in our streets and public realm. Through a combination of scheduled maintenance and upgrades; streetscape master planning and design on Rokeby Road (with
Rokeby South works soon to commence) and beyond (with a
Shenton Park streetscape opportunity and constraints review underway); and public realm upgrades including
Postal Walk,
Forrest Walk, and
Subi Greenwalks, we are creating a City of safe streets and improved public spaces one project at a time.
“I hope to see many people making use of the Safe Active Streets through Shenton Park to get to school or work, and to explore the rest of Subiaco.”
The City will continue to monitor local traffic to identify any unintended changes to traffic flow in the area, and in adjacent streets with a report due to come back to Council. Stay tuned on the City’s website for further updates.
The Safe Active Street program is a Department of Transport initiative, developed in partnership with local government.
