The City is set to renew its participation in a renewable energy agreement to continue to reducing its carbon emissions across its operations.

The City first signed on to the Sustainable Energy Project – coordinated by WALGA – in November 2021; it’s estimated to have saved participating local governments $34 million in expenditure and offset over 120,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The innovative power-purchasing project reduces the amount of energy derived through fossil fuels by utilising local renewable energy sources, with the bonus of reducing energy supply costs.

The project has helped the City work towards ambitious carbon reduction targets outlined in its Corporate Carbon Reduction Plan while bolstering the WA renewable energy industry.

Mayor David McMullen described the agreement as an important piece of the puzzle as the City continues to work towards a more sustainable future.

“We are the only carbon neutral certified local government in Western Australia; and the City of Subiaco will continue to lead the way with our actions against climate change to create a more sustainable future,” he said.

“The Sustainable Energy Project helps us progress towards our renewable energy and emission reduction targets; it decreases reliance on offsets; and it reduces our operational costs.”
