FOGO reminder: what goes in your green-lidded bin?
City residents are reminded to keep FOGO simple: only food scraps, garden organics, and certified compostable caddy liners belong in their lime green-lidded bin.
Statewide FOGO guidelines have recently been updated to exclude several items that were previously accepted, including pet poo, tea bags, tissues, paper towels, shredded paper, compostable food and drink packaging, and food-soiled paper and cardboard, such as used pizza boxes.
The simpler guidelines help reduce contamination and produce cleaner, high-quality compost for use on farms and in parks and gardens.
What goes in the FOGO bin?
Your FOGO bin is for:
food scraps, including fruit and vegetable scraps, meat, bones, seafood and shells, bread, dairy products, eggshells, loose tea leaves, coffee grounds, and plate scrapings
garden organics, including prunings, small branches and twigs, leaves, flowers, weeds, and lawn clippings
certified compostable caddy liners displaying the AS 4736 seedling logo.
What doesn’t go in the FOGO bin?
Keep the following items out of your FOGO bin:
pet poo, animal droppings, and kitty litter
tea bags
tissues, paper towels, and shredded paper
food-soiled paper and cardboard, including used pizza boxes
takeaway packaging, including compostable cups, containers, and trays
plastic of any kind
nappies
glass
plant pots
coffee pods.
Place these items in your red-lidded general waste bin. Clean paper and cardboard, including clean pizza boxes, can be placed in your yellow-lidded recycling bin.
Soil should not be placed in kerbside bins.
Bin collections remain the same
There are no changes to the City’s bin collection service:
lime green-lidded FOGO bins are collected weekly
red-lidded general waste bins and yellow-lidded recycling bins are collected fortnightly, on alternate weeks.
FOGO is available to all City of Subiaco residents. Once collected, food and garden organics are turned into high-quality compost, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and the greenhouse gas emissions it produces. FOGO compost is used in parks and gardens and is also available to purchase by the bag from the West Metro Recycling Centre.
