Explore Shenton Park’s hidden histories at free events
As part of the
Shenton Park Local Heritage Survey Review project, the City is hosting three free events exploring the hidden histories and heritage of the suburb of Shenton Park.
On Saturday 5 July, join a free walking tour titled ‘
Shenton Park’s hidden histories: Footsteps through time’, departing Lake Jualbup (corner of Herbert Road and Evans Street) at 10am and finishing at the corner of Rankin and Herbert roads at 12pm.
The tour is led by heritage consultant Annette Green, and will explore how a bushland fringe transformed into a thriving suburb. You’ll hear tales along the way about early builders, developers, and residents. Please bring water, a hat, and wear suitable footwear.
Next up, on Tuesday 8 July, head to the Shenton Park Community Centre for an
information evening about the history of Shenton Park and the Local Heritage Survey review. This event, from 6pm to 7.30pm, will feature a talk by historian Eddie Marcus, and also offer a chance to learn more about the Shenton Park Local Heritage Survey and how it helps to record and identify the unique heritage of our community.
The third event is another walking tour, titled
‘From “primeval forest” to established suburb in 30 years’ on Saturday 12 July. The tour begins at Palms Community Centre and ends on the corner of Rokeby Road and Thomas Street, running from 10am to 12pm.
On the walk, you’ll hear from heritage consultant Annette Green about the transformation of eastern Shenton Park from bushland to suburbia. You’ll trace the footsteps of the area’s early settlers, and discover how social change and architectural trends are reflected the streetscapes we see today. Again, please bring water, a hat, and wear comfortable footwear.
