Dementia-friendly library

Subiaco Library has proudly achieved 'working towards becoming dementia friendly' status.

This significant milestone demonstrates the City’s dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for people living with dementia and their families.

The library earned the status by embracing several key initiatives, including:
  • Engagement with the community: Subiaco Library actively involves people living with dementia, their care partners, and families in ways that value their contributions. This collaborative approach ensures that the services and resources provided are truly responsive to needs.
  • Community leadership: By setting a positive example within the community, the library enhances the lives of those affected by dementia. This involves not just service provision but also fostering a wider culture of understanding and respect.
  • Raising awareness and reducing stigma: Through awareness sessions facilitated with Dementia Australia, the library works to dispel misconceptions about dementia and promote local services. These sessions are a cornerstone of the library’s efforts to address stigma and offer practical support.
  • Ongoing commitment: The library’s dedication to becoming dementia-friendly is evident in its continuous efforts to improve and expand its services. This includes creating an environment that supports independence and well-being for those living with dementia.
Since 2023, Subiaco Library has offered 13 free information sessions, led by Dementia Australia, to offer carers and families of those affected by dementia the opportunity to connect, share experiences, and learn about available services.

The library also has six Dementia Memory Kits, which have been well-received and utilised by the community. Available for loan to all library members, these kits offer resources designed to engage and stimulate individuals with dementia.

Subiaco Mayor David McMullen emphasised the City's commitment to achieving dementia-friendly status.

"The library will keep refining its programs and expanding its services to better support the community," he said.

"The dedication of library staff and volunteers in raising awareness and offering practical support for individuals living with dementia is incredibly valuable. It plays an important role in our initiatives to ensure Subiaco is a welcoming and accessible place to live and visit."

The 'working towards becoming dementia friendly' status is achieved through Dementia Australia’s Dementia-Friendly Communities program. It’s called ‘working towards’ thanks to the organisation’s commitment to continuously improving and evolving support for those who need it.
