The City of Subiaco has walked away with a slew of awards at the latest Planning Institute of Australia’s (PIA) State Awards on Friday night – taking out five categories, including a Commendation in the prestigious Minister’s Award and the PIA WA President’s Award.
The City was recognised for excellence in the areas of Climate Change and Resilience, and Performance and Innovation in Development. A tertiary student project by one of the City’s Planning Officers was also recognised for its innovative approach to incorporating First Nations knowledge into urban planning.
The ONE Subiaco development brought in two of the awards that evening – the Performance and Innovation in Development Award and the Minister’s Award Commendation.
The project was celebrated for its revitalisation of the former Subiaco Pavillion Markets site.
Guided by the City’s planning scheme, the project established a model for community-centred, high-density urban development.
A groundbreaking case study that explored integrating First Nations knowledge in urban planning also received acclaim in the form of the Tertiary Student Project award and the PIA WA President’s award.
The case study, written by Planning Officer Liam Page, highlights how meaningful engagement with First Nations communities can lead to positive design and environmental outcomes.
Last but not least, the City received the Climate Change and Resilience award for its community-led approach to tackling climate change.

Mayor David McMullen said the awards recognise that the City’s planning team is operating at the highest level.
“Even at an industry event, alongside other high-performing peers, the City's planning team are building a reputation as thought leaders.
"Our planners go about their work with a focus on high quality development, productive partnerships, and an emphasis on community benefit.
"With this planning team, the City will continue its good work bringing together town planning, sustainability and community engagement, to encourage the best possible outcomes for our built and natural environments."
This is the second year the City has been honoured at this industry event, having last year been recognised for its leading approach to the
planning application process.
This year’s award-winning case study and sustainability local planning policy are now in line to receive national recognition at the PIA National Awards for Planning Excellence in May 2025.
