Sold-out session helps community stay safe online

Tech, tea and treats - Scam Awareness Week.webp

Subiaco Library welcomed a full house last month for its sold-out Tech, tea and treats – Scam Awareness Week session.

The free event sold out in advance before taking place on Friday 28 August, reflecting strong community interest in learning how to recognise scams and stay safe online.

Cybersecurity Awareness and Culture Expert Caitriona Forde used real-life examples to explain how scams can happen to anyone and shared practical guidance to help attendees identify and avoid digital threats.

Following the presentation, attendees could also receive one-on-one assistance from library staff with their mobile phones or tablets while enjoying tea and treats.

Scams continue to have a significant impact across the country, with Australians recording a combined $2.18 billion in reported scam losses during 2025.

The session formed part of Subiaco Library’s ongoing Tech, tea and treats series, which provides accessible digital education and practical support to help community members use technology with greater confidence.

Programs such as these complement the City’s broader community safety and crime-prevention work by giving people practical knowledge they can use to protect themselves online.

The series also contributes to the City’s positive ageing objectives by creating welcoming opportunities for older adults to develop their digital skills, access support, and remain connected and engaged in the community.

At an organisational level, the City is also strengthening its own cyber security posture through its Cyber Security Framework and Maturity Roadmap, staff training, and the continued decommissioning of outdated legacy systems.

Together, these initiatives support the City’s Council Plan objectives to foster an inclusive, safe, and resilient community while delivering strong governance and contemporary, secure services.
