New mural unveiled at Wandana

A new mural called 'Common Ground', created by artist Isaac Huggins, was unveiled at the Wandana Community Association social housing complex at a special event last week.

Residents of Wandana played a key role in shaping the final design of the mural through a series of workshops and conversations with the artist, with some residents even picking up a paint brush and contributing to the painting itself.

Artist Isaac Huggins said the mural’s design was inspired by the connection that many Wandana residents have with Kings Park just nearby.

“Because the park is visible from so many Wandana homes, it felt like a natural stating point for creating an artwork that reflected the local area. I wanted to celebrate some of the native plants and animals that make this part of Perth so special,” he said.

“More than anything, I hope the mural helps create a sense of belonging. I also hope it encourages people to take a closer look at the natural environment around them. If the artwork sparks conversations, or simply brightens someone’s day as they walk past, then I think it’s done its job. It was an honour to be involved in this project and the opportunity is something I will cherish for years to come.”

The City of Subiaco has supported Wandana initiatives since 2019 through its Community Development Grants program, and Community Partnership program.

In recent years, the City’s support has included enhancements to the Wandana community garden; including new plans, tools, and signage, a fortnightly morning tea for residents, offsite excursions for residents, and support for events.

The mural unveiling follows Wandana’s 70th anniversary celebrations in March, which saw residents, volunteers, community organisations and notable members of local and state government attend a birthday event at the complex.
