17 new places included on Heritage List
At its April meeting, Council endorsed the inclusion of 17 places onto the
Heritage List, under the City’s Local Planning Scheme No. 5.
Criteria developed by the Heritage Council of Western Australia is used by the City of Subiaco to assess places and areas of local heritage significance.
As well as recognising this significance, inclusion on the City’s Heritage List provides a level of protection to properties, and ensures that any future development and refurbishment is undertakenin a way that respects and enhances heritage values.
Notable properties that will be added to the City’s Heritage List include;
- 1 Hay Street, the site of the former Junction Supply Store, which was constructed in 1904 and is the oldest example of a corner store in Subiaco where the traditional form and function is still recognisable.
- 270 York Street, which was built in 1903 for Franz ‘Otto’ Lipfert, the WA Museum’s first taxidermist and the creator and namesake of ‘Otto’ the blue whale skeleton, which still hangs in the museum today.
- 19 Coolgardie Street, built in 1904 and a conjoined residence for Minnie Lloyd, who established Nurse Lloyd’s “Hawaii” Private Maternity Hospital at 23 Coolgardie Street in 1908. The property also offers a representative example of a well designed and detailed bungalow of Subiaco from the early twentieth century.
- 44 Nicholson Road, constructed in 1904 and showcases an excellent and rare example of a Federation Queen Anne cottage.
Of the new Heritage List inclusions, Mayor David McMullen said, “Heritage is highly valued by our community, and we as a Council are committed to recognising and preserving our City’s vast history and heritage.
“These new additions to our Heritage List enable us to continue to protect and maintain Subiaco’s charming built heritage so it can be enjoyed by generations to come. Conscious that these include peoples' homes, we have done this following a period of consultation; and in a way that will not preclude future improvements and renovations."
