The Heritage Act 2018 requires local governments to prepare and maintain a Local Heritage Survey (LHS). The LHS is an information resource that identifies places in the local district that are, or may become, of cultural heritage significance.
The LHS provides the City with a cultural and historical record of the area and tells the story of the development within the district. It is not an instrument for development control, so owners can continue to develop their properties in accordance with the local planning framework.
The Heritage List forms part of the City of Subiaco Local Planning Scheme and identifies properties of cultural heritage significance worthy of protection.
The objectives of the heritage list are to:
- facilitate the conservation of places of heritage value
- ensure that development occurs with due regard to identified heritage values in the interest of the community
Inclusion of a place in the heritage list does not prohibit development of the place. Instead, changes made to a place should respect and be sympathetic to the heritage values of the place.

A Heritage Area is an area that has been assessed as having cultural heritage significance which has been deemed necessary to apply special controls to conserve and enhance the streetscape(s).
A heritage area may contain elements of only minor individual significance but heightened collective significance. It may also include elements of little or no significance. The places that make or do not make a contribution to the area will be clearly identified in the heritage assessment and the relevant Local Planning Policy for the area.
The City’s heritage areas may be viewed as a list and a map.
The state register includes properties that have cultural heritage significance at a state level. Planning approval is required when developing these properties and any development application received is required to be referred to the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage for comment.
