Women’s self-defence classes return for second year

Self defence

WestStar Martial Arts, supported by the City of Subiaco, is hosting a series of monthly women’s self-defence workshops designed to build confidence, skills, and empowerment.

The workshops will introduce simple, direct and effective self-defence techniques and strategies that will help women protect themselves in a range of potential scenarios.

Stephen Renton, owner and founder of WestStar Martial Arts (based at the Subiaco PCYC), said the classes have been very well attended so far.

“The demand for these classes has been incredible, and we’ve had some really great feedback – some participants have gone so far as to say this needs to be taught in all schools,” he said.

“We’re thankful to the City of Subiaco for their initiative in organising and promoting these classes. It’s great to see the Council being proactive in empowering women across Subiaco and beyond.”

Mayor David McMullen said, “While we certainly hope nobody ever has to use it, learning self-defence in a supportive environment like this is something the City is proud to support to help members of our community feel safer and more empowered.”

Attendees should wear comfortable workout attire, and bring a sweat towel and a bottle of water.

Registration is essential via www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/events.
