Winners announced for 2025 Craig Silvey Award for Young Writers
Winners of the prestigious 2025 Craig Silvey Award for Young Writers, the City of Subiaco’s youth writing award, were announced at a special ceremony on Monday 20 October.
This year’s award attracted more than 1180 entries from school students across Western Australia (a 25 per cent increase from the 2024 award), which included submissions from as far as Broome, Narrogin, Pemberton and other regional areas.
In his address during the award ceremony, patron and award-winning author Craig Silvey noted that the standard of submissions this year was of the highest calibre.
“Your stories made me laugh, made me gasp, made me tense, made me cry. They made me consider the world anew and askew. You took me to worlds that were profound, impassioned and unpredictable. I hope you all continue writing as you are all astonishingly talented and the world needs more of your words,” Craig said.
Winners were announced for each school-aged category, with Caleb Kameron from Daglish taking out the title of overall winner for
The Other Brother.
This is the second time Caleb has won the prestigious award. He
took out the top prize in 2023, during Craig’s first year as the award’s patron, for his piece called
Sea Spirit.
The winners for each category were:
- Lower Primary: Hans Teo, Mount Hawthorn Primary School, Monkey Power
- Middle Primary: Caleb Kameron, Christ Church Grammar School, The Other Brother
- Upper Primary: Felix Calautti, Floreat Park Primary School, Into the Abyss
- Lower Secondary: Shaun Toor, Willetton Senior High School, When She’s Born
- Upper Secondary: Misha Anwar, Lesmurdie Senior High School, A Kite in Gaza
Mayor David McMullen commended all finalists and winners of the 2025 award.
“The Craig Silvey Award provides an invaluable opportunity for young storytellers across the state to have their work read by one of Australia’s most prolific and decorated authors, Craig Silvey.
“I’d like to thank Craig for his ongoing patronage, and I’d like to congratulate the winners, finalists, and the nearly 1200 young writers who entered this year’s award for sharing their talent and creativity with us.”
The award-winning stories and finalists’ entries are on display at Subiaco Library until Sunday 26 October. Be sure to drop in and vote for your favourite for the People’s Choice Award.
