Volunteers recognised and thanked at special event
The City of Subiaco held its annual Volunteering Sundowner event last night to recognise and thank its hard-working volunteers, as well as volunteers from local community organisations.
On the night, Marney Stone from Books on Wheels received the Volunteer of the Year Award.
Marney was recognised for her reliability and dedication to the Books on Wheels initiative; a fortnightly delivery of library books to elderly members of the community. In addition to delivering the books, Marney also spends an extra morning every fortnight selecting books, DVDs and talking books for the recipients.
This year’s event also saw the launch of a new award: the Community Organisation Volunteer of the Year Award.
Ross (Bill) Trudgian was the recipient of the inaugural award. A passionate a reliable volunteer as part of The Salvation Army’s Subiaco Engagement and Assessment Team at The Third Place, Ross was nominated by his team leader Brett McCaul, who said, “His passion and hard work is truly the heart and soul of how all of our events run at the centre."
A number of service awards were also given out on the night. Nayer Qasemian-Sian was recognised for 10 years of service to the Environmental Health Program, and the following volunteers were recognised for 5 years of service:
- Former Mayor and Freeman of the City Heather Henderson – Lords Recreation Centre
- Dianne Harper – Lords Recreation Centre
- Rachel Eva Lorimer – Lords Recreation Centre
- Madeline Tyter – member of Subi Voice of Youth
- Rose Fairey – member of Subi Voice of Youth.
Mayor David McMullen said, “Each of the City’s volunteers, and volunteers within our community organisations, play a vital role in supporting and strengthening our community. Their passion and commitment should be commended, and events like tonight are a fantastic opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate their invaluable contributions to our City.”
Almost 100 volunteers and representatives from community organisations were in attendance, encompassing groups including Vocal Ensemble Voiceworks, The Salvation Army, Onslow Park Tennis Club, The Subiaco Walking Group, Subi Church, and many more.
