Two new categories and new judge announced for 2025 Photographic Awards

The City of Subiaco’s Photographic Awards are back for 2025 with two brand-new categories and one new judge: multi award-winning and Subiaco-based advertising and portrait photographer, Stef King.

‘People and Portrait’ and ‘Nature’ will join the existing categories of AI and Open (no entry restrictions) for the 2025 award, with photographers of all skill levels over six years of age eligible to enter up to four photographs for consideration.

No stranger to ‘People and Portraits’ is the awards’ newest judge Stef King. Stef has photographed some of Australia’s most notable politicians, celebrities, and athletes, and is renowned for her ability to tell stories and evoke emotion through her images.

Stef also has extensive experience in advertorial photography and has worked on campaigns for Disney and Nikon.

Stef said, “I’ve always loved Subiaco, and I’m loving the vibrant community and wonderful people I get to meet at my studio in Doyle Court on Rokeby Road. Taking portraits for me is like having a conversation with people, and since moving into Subi I’ve been privileged to meet and photograph many people – and create some wonderful images along the way!”

Stef has some valuable advice for those considering entering the awards this year.

“Enter work that you love, not what you think other people will love. Go with your gut and enter work that is interesting to your own unique point of view – it’s those unique ideas or angles that will catch a judge’s attention.”

Mayor David McMullen described the awards as a highlight on the City’s cultural events program.

“The Photographic Awards celebrate the creativity and imagination of people of all ages. It’s always impressive to see the calibre of work that is submitted.

“The two new categories in this year's awards offer even more opportunity for creativity, and I'm looking forward to see what photographs we receive.”

This year, $5800 of prize money will be awarded, divided into the following categories.

Grand Prize: $1,500
Nature Category Prize: $800
Open Category Prize: $800
People and Portrait Category Prize: $800
AI Category Prize: $800
Subiaco Resident’s Prize: $500
Youth Prize (ages 12 to 17 years): $300
Kid’s Prize (under 12): $200
People’s Choice Award: $100

Entries for the 2025 Photographic Awards are open from Monday 5 May to Sunday 8 June. All finalists’ works will be exhibited at Subiaco Library from Monday 4 August, and members of the public will be invited to vote for the People’s Choice Award during the exhibition period.
