Tennis club gets served a new lease on life

The City has helped breathe new life into the Daglish Tennis Club after contributing to a recent refurbishment of the club facilities.

The tennis club has been an important part of the local community for almost 94 years but the clubhouse and toilet block were built in the 1970s and have not been refurbished since, making it difficult to attract new members.

A financial contribution from the City and some hard work from handy club members, has finally made the upgrade to the toilets and clubhouse a reality.

Daglish Tennis Club Secretary and Treasurer Jude Rowohlt and Club President Frank Morgan said, “Refurbishment of the Daglish Tennis Club clubroom has brought it into the 21st Century, with new toilets and showers and new standards of safety and amenity. The clubroom is now a pleasant and practical space for members and visitors.

“Our 93-year-old heritage-listed tennis club remains at the centre of community activities in Daglish, one of the few suburbs in Perth developed according to ‘Garden City’ principles, designed to promote quality of life.

“The refurbished tennis clubrooms will help attract members, enhance enjoyment of its amenity, and will add to the sense of community enjoyed by people from the local area.”

Mayor David McMullen described clubs such as the Daglish Tennis Club as being important focal points for local community.

“I did a brief round of adult tennis lessons at the club a few years back, and know what a great place it is to have a rally,” he said.

"I applaud the members for their commitment to the tennis club, and their combined efforts towards the facility upgrades.

“Now the job is done, I hope the club members can enjoy the new amenities, attract some new people to club, and of course - play lots of tennis.”

The Daglish Tennis Club will be holding a special opening event in March next year to celebrate the upgrade and mark 94 years since the Mayor of Subiaco at the time opened the club.

The City works closely with a wide range of sport and recreation providers in the City of Subiaco to ensure there are varied and sustainable options in the area to meet community needs. For more on sport and recreation in the City, head to the dedicated webpage.
