Sustainable approach to road resurfacing

Asphalt
The City’s Engineering team has begun utilising recycled waste rubber in its road asphalt mixes – which is redirecting waste rubber (used tyres) away from landfill.

In what is known as gap-graded crumb rubber (GGCR) asphalt, recycled waste rubber partially replaces bitumen, resulting in a lower overall bitumen requirement.

So far, approximately 985 used tyres have been repurposed as part of asphalting works.

The tyre rubber has enhanced the performance, flexibility and longevity of the asphalt, thanks to improved resistance to cracking and rutting. The rubber also offers better sound absorption, leading to quieter roads, and better skid resistance and grip, which improves road safety in wet weather conditions.

This initiative contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions, and supports a more sustainable and forward-thinking approach to road construction.
