The Evelyn H Parker Library restoration project was recognised at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Awards on Friday night, taking out the Excellence in Asset Management category for Western Australia.
The project began in the lead-up to the library’s 50th anniversary, when building assessments identified factors that posed a risk to its structural integrity and longevity.
As a result, a series of renovations and restorations were planned to address issues and retain the library’s original architectural character. This involved consultation with the library’s original architect, Dennis Silver (who was 94 years of age during the project), who provided valuable insight into the original design intent.
The project showcased innovative approaches in heritage restoration, service continuity (through the set-up of a pop-up library just next door to the building), and asset management.
Mayor David McMullen congratulated everyone involved with the project.
“This award is state-level recognition of the City of Subiaco's commitment to our rich history, and investment in the future of our community spaces.
“Restoration of the Evelyn H Parker Library has ensured that this important community space will be enjoyed for generations to come, as its use continues to evolve with what it means to be a modern library for contemporary and future communities.”
A celebratory event was held at the end of the project to unveil the new façade, and to screen a special documentary (watch below) that gave a behind-the-scenes look at the project and the library’s storied history.
