Staff complete inclusive training

Cultural Services City staff have completed specialised training with Sensorium Theatre to offer a new level of inclusivity for children in their programs and events, particularly those with disabilities.

Sensorium Theatre had previously delivered impactful Sensory Rhymetime sessions at the library, but as a small organisation with many ongoing projects, the team saw the opportunity to support the continuation of the regular session internally.

The training not only ensures the program’s longevity at the library but also provided valuable insights into sensory engagement and the importance of allowing participants to explore activities at their own pace for other library events and programs.

It covered how people process their senses, how to identify signs of sensory engagement or avoidance, and the significance of providing time and space for children to experience and interact with the activities.

Staff jumped at the opportunity to enhance their skills and broaden their understanding of sensory needs within the community.

By adding sensory elements to other programs, staff are better equipped to address the diverse needs of attendees, ensuring that all individuals are included and supported.

In addition to the new program, the City of Subiaco has introduced sensory kits that can be borrowed from Subiaco Library. They contain carefully selected items designed to stimulate the senses and provides individuals with the chance to explore sensory resources and discover what works best to support their needs.

There are also two not-for-loan kits: one for anyone needing resources when they visit the library, and the other that can be used at community events to support attendees.

Mayor David McMullen said, “Whether attending Sensory Rhymetime or other City events, much of the community will benefit from enhanced multi-sensory experiences and more inclusive environments that staff are now better equipped to facilitate.

“The goal is to ensure that every session, whether large or small, is accessible and supportive for everyone.

“The City of Subiaco is excited to continue fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where all children, regardless of their needs, can fully participate in and enjoy community programs and events."

About Sensory Rhymetime

Sensory Rhymetime is designed specifically for children with disabilities, providing a smaller, more intimate setting where facilitators can focus on the individual needs of each child.

This more personalised approach reduces the overwhelming experience that can come with larger, more crowded sessions.

Each session focuses on one rhyme, offering a range of sensory activities and experiences, and participants are encouraged to engage in whatever way feels most comfortable for them.
