Smart bins powered by solar have been installed across the City with 18 now in place and counting.
The solar bins compact rubbish and alert the collection team when they need to be emptied, making better use of City resources and reducing associated costs such as fuel.
They hold up to 5x the capacity of a standard 120L bin and bring a number of benefits including preventing overflow and windblown litter and decreasing the frequency of pick-ups (which can be a nuisance for nearby businesses).
The bins are no touch (foot pedal only) and are also designed to be more difficult for critters to access.
The City will continue to roll out these smart solar bins each year to slowly replace more traditional bins.
These bins are part of the City’s commitment to creating a more sustainable future and finding efficiencies in service delivery.
