The City of Subiaco is taking a proactive, coordinated approach to avian influenza preparedness, after the first case of avian influenza (bird flu) was detected in the Perth metropolitan area on 23 June 2026.
State and federal government departments are guiding City staff on avian influenza, including how to recognise potential signs and appropriate response actions.
Increased environmental audits are being conducted at City-managed lakes, focused on high-risk species, particularly ducks and swans, and signage will be placed in lake locations to encourage reporting to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline (1800 675 888) and Wildcare Helpline (9474 9055) for suspected avian influenza cases.
Early reporting enables early detection. Visit the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries website for detailed information on how to detect signs of infection. Residents are encouraged not to touch any birdlife, and to stay informed of avian influenza warning signs, which include birds that can't stand, walk, or fly properly, and swollen appearances.
The City will keep the community informed via its website and Facebook page for future updates.
