Shenton Park has gained a vibrant new mural, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Perth artist Olive Cheng and local students from Rosalie Primary School.
The City of Subiaco commissioned Olive Cheng – a local artist and former teacher with a background in landscape architect – to run a creative workshop with the local students to help design the area’s latest public artwork.
The mural, fondly named ‘Child’s Play,’ brightens up the concrete parkour elements and climbing wall in the
Rosalie Park Mixed Use Space.
It features Western Australian native flora and fauna and provided an opportunity for the students to showcase their creative ideas and voices to the rest of the community.
At an unveiling of the final mural yesterday, Olive showed the students how their ideas were brought to life in the piece.
“Projects like this one encourage connection, and a sense of place,” Mayor David McMullen said.
“Rather than blank walls and plain concrete, we now have a piece of public art in which young local community members have taken ownership.
“The mural complements the Rosalie Mixed Use Space, which is now a great little spot in Shenton Park where we see functionality and creativity all coming together.”
