New community programs at Subiaco Library this summer

IntergenerationalStorytime 0792
Subiaco Library is one of 115 public libraries from across Australia who have received grant funding through the Australian Library and Information Association for a series of community events.

The grant is for ‘community cohesion’ projects, and will see the library deliver three months of special community programming to encourage a sense of belonging within the Subiaco community. Here’s an overview of what’s to come at the library.

Build your neighbourhood – drop-in craft display
From Monday 5 January to Monday 2 February, visitors can drop in to Subiaco Library to create paper buildings and add to a growing display of the Subiaco neighbourhood. Everyone is welcome to participate!

Cultural Storytelling
During the January school holidays, cultural storytelling sessions will be facilitated to share cultural knowledge and nurture connections with people. These sessions will be hosted by local providers Barking Gecko and Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company and are perfect for 6 to 12-year-olds.

Cultural Storytime
Running monthly from 23 January until 20 March, these special storytime sessions for kids under 5 will nurture early social connections and support families to connect with new people from different backgrounds and experiences. They will include 30 minutes of storytelling and 30 minutes of playtime or crafting.

Friday Film Club
Running on the first Friday of each month from February 2026 and facilitated by WAAPA film academic Dr. Damien Spiccia, this new film club will view world cinema and include engaging discussions with the group after each watch. This club aims to foster community engagement, media literacy, and cultural conversation in a relaxed and inclusive environment. It will open for 18 to 40-year-olds to join.

Community Connect Expo
The City’s Cultural Services team will deliver the very first Community Connect Expo on Saturday 21 February 2026. This event will include skills workshops for community members, and information about volunteering opportunities in Subiaco for adults.

Harmony Week outdoor movie night
At the 2026 Harmony Week outdoor movie night, a range of activities will be available before the movie starts, including Henna painting, a lion dancing performance, giant games and food trucks. This event is scheduled for Saturday 21 March 2026 at the Subi Night Market.
