Museum gallery refurbishment

MuseumDress 2040
UPDATE: Subiaco Museum will be closed from Monday 30 June to Friday 15 August 2025 for refurbishment.

Subiaco Museum’s permanent exhibition space is getting its first major refurbishment since the 70s to create a more flexible space and better experience for visitors.

The museum’s back gallery is used for larger exhibitions and is home to several permanent exhibits – including a reconstructed façade of 210 Park Street.

The space is used regularly for public and educational programs including school visits, Museum Mornings and family activity days.

The refurbishment will create a more interactive, engaging and contemporary experience for visitors as well as a better environment for preserving and displaying the City’s heritage collections, and a more flexible space to deliver community programs.

Works will include:
  • upgraded lighting
  • new interactive and engaging displays
  • the introduction of audio-visual elements
  • improved presentation of items and signage to tell the stories behind exhibits
  • replacing ageing cabinetry – which was originally donated in the 1980s.
Mayor David McMullen welcomed the refurbishment.

“Subiaco Museum is an important part of our City and enables us to preserve and promote our important heritage for future generations,” he said.

“Similar to works we undertook at our library in February 2020, we’re responding to the changing needs of the community and ensuring that the museum changes with the times and gives visitors an engaging experience to remember.

“The museum turns 50 in November so now is the perfect time to rejuvenate our largest gallery and bring the space in line with modern standards.”

The refurbishment works are expected to commence this winter and will take about two weeks with the museum closed during this time.

The museum’s online collection will still be accessible during this time via Collections WA and there will be some displays in Subiaco Library during the closure period.

Creative Spaces have been contracted by the City to undertake the refurbishment works.
