Lords instructor receives national award
Jo-Anne Starkie, group fitness instructor at Lords Recreation Centre, received a Life-Time Member Award at the 2025 AUSactive Awards in Sydney this month.
The award, nominated by the AUSactive Board, recognises outstanding contributions in promoting preventative health and exercise.
Jo-Anne has taught at Lords for the past 15 years, and has 30 years of experience within the fitness industry.
Of her win, Jo-Anne said “I enjoy helping others to move and sharing the message that movement can contribute to overall health and wellbeing. I do it because I know, from personal and shared experiences, that movement makes a significant difference. To be acknowledged for doing what I love and believe in is a great honour.”
Jo-Anne also has some advice for people who have never tried group fitness before.
“Group fitness classes are one way to move with guidance, support and encouragement from others. There are a huge variety of classes available, so try different things to find what you enjoy and what you feel works well for you and your body. It is so important to listen to your own body and respond accordingly. Let us help you get moving.”
Mayor David McMullen said, “This award is fantastic recognition for Jo-Anne’s many years of experience in the fitness sector, and her commitment to helping people stay active and healthy. Our community is very lucky to have such a passionate group fitness instructor like her at Lords, and I’d like to congratulate her on this achievement.”
