The SPACEMRKT shopfront at 83 Rokeby Road has welcomed its very first exhibitor; globally renowned artist Donna Gough.
Donna has arrived in Subiaco after her recent solo exhibition in Los Angeles, and brings with her a collection of works from her ‘Berlin Black’ painting series, which she began working on during a three-month artist residency program in Berlin in 2023.
She has exhibited pieces in group and solo shows across the world, has been featured in British Vogue, and won the Sculpture and Installation Award following her Master’s Degree in Art at the University of New South Wales.
Of this exhibition, Donna said, “I explore geometry as a universal language, and visitors to this Rokeby Road space can expect to see a contemporary painting aesthetic that is non-objective and minimal abstract.”
The exhibition is part of a partnership between the City of Subiaco and urban-renewal organisation SPACEMRKT that aims to transform vacant spaces into vibrant hubs that give local creatives a chance to showcase their work. It will be open on weekends until the end of May, and visitors are invited to stop in and have a chat to Donna as she works.
Mayor David McMullen said, “We are very happy to welcome Donna Gough to Subiaco as part of our partnership with SPACEMRKT. She is the first of many artists who are set to take over this once-vacant shopfront in the heart of Rokeby Road. Through pop-ups like these, we are replacing empty windows with art, visitation and vibrancy.”
Donna’s exhibition is the first in an upcoming series of programming at the Rokeby Road shopfront, which is set to feature a range of mediums including sculptures, paintings, and fine art.
Stay tuned on the City’s website and Facebook page for further updates about SPACEMRKT in Subiaco, including their second location which will open on Hay Street soon.
