Happy third birthday to Subiaco’s beloved giant
Today, 12 November, Subiaco’s much-loved giant, Bille Bob, celebrates his third birthday, marking three years since making Theatre Gardens his home.
Part of the Giants of Mandurah exhibition by internationally renowned artist Thomas Dambo, Bille Bob was the only Giant to venture outside the Mandurah–Peel region as part of the free outdoor exhibition.
Dambo uses recycled pallets to draw global audiences into a conversation about waste, wonder, and our relationship with the planet.
As with Dambo’s other 172 sculptures spread across 23 countries, Bille Bob will eventually return to the earth, reminding us to make better use of our limited resources after showcasing how discarded materials can become objects of beauty.
Since his arrival in 2022, Bille Bob has become a beloved part of Subiaco’s landscape, attracting tens of thousands of visitors, who have come to marvel at his intricate design, thoughtful expression and connection to the natural environment.
To prolong the community’s enjoyment of Bille Bob, City staff and contractors have provided ongoing care and maintenance to ensure he continues to look his best. His extended stay – significantly longer than the one to two years Bille Bob was expected to last – is a testament to this careful stewardship and the community’s affection for him.
Mayor David McMullen said Bille Bob has captured the imagination of the local community and visitors, since the day he arrived.
“Bille Bob is part of a trail of Thomas Dambo sculptures that is making its way across the globe. We have been so fortunate to have our very own Giant right here in Subi for the last 3 years (and counting).
“In keeping with the artist’s intentions, Bille Bob will not be here forever; but all the photos, the stories and the memories will live on. There is still time to visit Bille Bob in Subiaco, but not for long. Come to discover, or come to say farewell.”
