Get ready for the Aussie Bird Count
You’re invited to join in the 2024 Aussie Bird Count happening during National Bird Week, 14 to 20 October to help build up a snapshot about local birds and changes in the environment year-to-year.
This all-ages citizen science project asks you to spend just 20 minutes in your garden, a nearby park or local playground and report how many birds you see.
You can submit your results using the app or a web form, and there’s a built-in tool to help you identify any birds you’re unsure of. There’s even a prize up for grabs for anyone who participates.
There were 307 birds spotted across WA in the 2023 count with the Rainbow Lorikeet, New Holland Honeyeater and Galah taking out the top spots.
Collecting this data allows BirdLife Australia – who run the count – to look at trends in our bird communities and inform strategic priorities that aim to halt bird extinctions and overall bird declines.
