Council gives blackspot road safety projects the green light
City of Subiaco streets are set to be safer after works were given the green light by Council this week for three local traffic blackspots.
The projects will be funded entirely by the Australian Government Blackspot Program which helps to improve road safety of areas with a proven crash history or locations that are identified as high-risk.
By funding relatively low-cost safety works like traffic islands, and traffic calming devices like speed humps, the program helps to reduce crashes and save hundreds of lives on Australian roads.
The projects given the green light at this week’s Ordinary Council Meeting were:
- Raised speed plateaus at the Salvado Road and Old Jacaranda Way intersection.
- A new roundabout at the Derby Road and Heytesbury Road intersection.
- Raised speed plateaus on Derby Road between Nicholson Road and Aberdare Road.
Various engineering options were considered for each blackspot location with recommended road treatment measures approved by Main Roads Western Australia.
An independent assessment of alternative treatments on Derby Road between Nicholson Road and Aberdare Road was also undertaken by an accredited road safety auditor.
Construction on these projects will commence this financial year.
